6/10/2023 0 Comments Being Jamie Baker by Kelly Oram![]() ![]() ![]() Whenever she has extreme emotions she charges whomever she’s touching like a battery. So Jamie happens to have an electrical supercharge running throughout her body at all times. What’s wrong with that, you say? Well nothing except Jamie Baker at one point had a freak accident involving toxic waste and tons of electricity. ![]() So I’m going to review this as if I was watching a Saturday morning episode of X-Men: The Animated Series. Does that make sense? I think before I was taking things too seriously. I used to throw ice cubes from trees, lame superpower but still… Did I mention I met a guy at work with the last name “Xmann?” I think I freaked him out.If I had a last name like that I’d be naming my kids all sorts of awesome names.Īnyway I was all prepared to give this book a semi-bad review despite the similarities to my favorite superheroes, but then I actually saw the book trailer after reading and I felt that put things in better perspective. I’m the biggest Rogue and Gambit fan, not to mention X-Men fan in general. “reminiscent, in a way, of Xmen’s Rogue and Gambit” ![]()

6/10/2023 0 Comments Colum mccann apeirogon![]() ![]() A writer needs to render as many aspects of the situation as he or she can. There are so many one-dimensional distortions of both the Palestinians and the Israelis. Or certainly I – as a taxpayer in the United States – am complicit. ![]() In relation to Israel and Palestine, we are, yes, complicit in what is happening there. By the act of telling, they make us complicit in the stories of the loss of their daughters. My novel concerns two men – one Israeli, one Palestinian – who become friends despite the evidence and the odds. I suppose I mean this in two very different senses – complicity in the darkness and then the complicity in the availability of light. Were you aware of that inescapable complicity when you were writing this book?Ĭ: Complicity is at the heart of all story-telling, yes. We are collectively responsible for the moment when a bomb exploded and killed one daughter, when a gun was drawn and emptied into another. ![]() R: Apeirogon is a novel where you make the whole world complicit in the events of one story. ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments Bleach, Vol. 1 by Tite Kubo![]() I hate this series more than most of anything else. I feel as if I am rambling, but the point is, this is a truly amazing manga, and that it should be read right away! In all previous mangas I've read, the mangaka will stick to a few sets of outfits for his characters to wear, but Tite Kubo goes all out! Especially in the filler sketches. The storyline is truly amazing (and still ongoing, might I add) and blew me away! And, even though I don't usually dwell on things like clothes, the clothes are absolutely amazing! All the different designs he's thought up. Even when I thought (after reading the first book) there was no room for Tite Kubo to improve, since he was already such an amazing mangaka. ![]() This manga series is absolutely amazing! Anyone considering whether or not to read this manga, read it now! And for those of you currently reading the series but not yet finished with all the books, you will be blown away by Tite Kubo's advancement in skill! The beginning of bleach has amazing artwork, and at the end there's such an incredible improvement in the way he draws the characters. ![]() ![]() And nowadays, it’s as easy as typing “Make an essay for me” in live chat. Talented intellectuals, artists, poets, philosophers and writers struggled in exile, eking out a living at menial jobs. I loved the landscape, the rich tapestry of mid-century Americana, prairies and cities. FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE MULTI-MILLION COPY BESTSELLER A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOWAn absolute beauty of a book. When two other characters enter the story-acquaintances from Emmett’s recent past named Woolly and Duchess-a third path opens. Billy has a plan too, a journey mapped by a mysterious series of postcards laid in a line on the kitchen table. Emmett has big reasons to leave the state, and a plan. The two boys are alone, but have each other. The Lincoln Highway begins with eighteen-year-old Emmett, recently returned from juvenile detention in 1954, reuniting with his little brother, Billy, on their foreclosed Nebraska farm. I can’t remember the last time I cared more about the heroes of a book so thoroughly and quickly. When I opened the first pages of Amor Towles’s newest novel, The Lincoln Highway, I had a feeling I was in for just this kind of experience-bighearted and hopeful, perilous and enlightening. The stakes are even higher when the underdogs are kids or teens-adventures like This Tender Land, classics like Huckleberry Finn. Give me a group of underdogs with a sea or continent to cross, the promise of treasure and an arduous road, and I’m all in. ![]() |
