6/7/2023 0 Comments Little women novelSet in a small New England town during the Civil War and Reconstruction, Little Women, or Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy (1868-69), introduces Alcott’s remarkable heroines, the March sisters-above all, her alter ego Jo March, with her literary ambition and independent spirit. This volume also includes the original illustrations, some drawn by Alcott’s sister May, that accompanied the books’ first printings. Here, in an authoritative single-volume edition from The Library of America, are all three Little Women books as Alcott wrote them. Asked by her publisher to “write a girls’ book,” Louisa May Alcott at first doubted her abilities she confessed to her journal that she “never liked girls or knew many, except my sisters.” Yet from this modest start, she fashioned a series of novels that catapulted her to fame and fortune in her own time and remain among the most beloved works in all of American literature.

6/7/2023 0 Comments The mist stephen king netflixIn the aftermath of a nasty storm, a father and son go to a grocery store to restock various food items. All I had was the vague recollection of flappy, bat creatures terrorizing people in a grocery store from the trailer I had seen years earlier. I was sick with a lingering cold and knew next to nothing about the movie. In many ways, it was the best of situations. But there I was the other night, remote control in hand, the red ribbon of Netflix booting up on my TV, ready to be lost in a horror pick. Were it not for the personal recommendation from Pastor Brito, the movie likely would have remained forever lost in the endless tunnels of Netflix. It flirts with brilliancy-plays footsie with it-like a pair of middle-schoolers who cannot truly reach the heights of love but mimic its form, perhaps even feeling like they’re swimming in love’s deeper currents.Īnd yet! The ending is so shockingly poignant-so shockingly unexpected (at least for me)-that the last five minutes of the film very nearly absolved all the overwrought and bewilderingly unrealistic moments. Rarely has a film confounded my movie sensibilities so powerfully as Frank Darabont’s “The Mist.” Somehow and in some way it is simultaneously terrible yet entertaining, ridiculous yet strangely compelling, pedestrian yet brilliant. Written with lucid and compelling style, this book goes beyond truncated modes of thought, inviting us to entertain iconoclastic views, and to ask why things are as they are. He affirms the relevance of taboo ideologies like Marxism, demonstrating the importance of class analysis in understanding political realities and dealing with the ongoing collision between ecology and global corporatism. He also maps out the external and internal forces that destroyed communism, and the disastrous impact of the "free-market" victory on eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Parenti shows how "rational fascism" renders service to capitalism, how corporate power undermines democracy, and how revolutions are a mass empowerment against the forces of exploitative privilege. Blackshirts & Reds explores some of the big issues of our time: fascism, capitalism, communism, revolution, democracy, and ecology-terms often bandied about but seldom explored in the original and exciting way that has become Michael Parenti's trademark. Notable directors whose early work was in music videos include David Fincher, Jonathan Glazer, Michel Gondry, and Spike Jonze. With the success of MTV and the popularity of music videos from the early 1980s, this gave another avenue for directors to hone their skills. As commercial television advertising became more cinematic in the 1960s and 1970s, many directors' early work was in this medium, including directors such as Alan Parker and Ridley Scott. Notable directors who did their first directorial work in this medium include Robert Altman, Norman Jewison, Sidney Lumet, and Alfonso Cuarón. Often these early works were not intended for commercial release either by intent, such as film school projects or inability to find distribution.Ĭonsequently, as television gained popularity in the 1940s and 1950s, many directors began to learn their craft in this medium. Many film makers have directed works which were not commercially released, for example early works by Orson Welles such as his filming of his stage production of Twelfth Night in 1933 or his experimental short film The Hearts of Age in 1934. The films and dates referred to are a director's first commercial cinematic release. This is a list of film directorial debuts in chronological order. Can Sid save Nirrim from herself? Plus, this book is fun: hexes, moonlit rituals, a pet plant named Alice the Aloe, and well-placed critiques of gender, capitalism, and the alienating nature of advanced technology all abound. More than linger, Lake embraces it, forgoing the neat narrative of before and after in favor of the messiness of process and becoming. But I love how Future Feeling lingers in the mayhem. Am I doing the plot justice? Not really-I told you this book revels in its own chaos, and chaos and coherent narrative summary don’t tend to mix. Rather than falling on its intended target, the hex sends Blithe, an adopted Chinese trans man raised by white parents, to the Shadowlands, a dark landscape one goes to when they have “completely lost their shit.” The Rhiz, a highly elite underground queer organization, enlists Pen and Aiden to bring Blithe back from the Shadowlands, where he’s struggling emotionally with his transracial upbringing and gender transition. Joss Lake’s debut novel kicks off when Pen, a trans man who works as a dog walker, enlists his roommates, the Witch and the Stoner-Hacker, to place a hex on Aiden, a trans influencer whom Pen resents. Part sci-fi, part fantasy, part trans Brooklynite millennial saga, Future Feeling revels in its own chaos. 6/6/2023 0 Comments Angelique sergeanne golonSerge Golon died in 1972, but Anne continued to write. The saga of Angélique has sold over 100 million books, has had 320 publishers and over 45 translations. The books were published by Bantam in 1958 in the United States and by Pan Books and other publishers in the United Kingdom. The books are not technically romances, more historic fiction with the continuing story of Angélique (and her husband, Joffrey de Peyrac) spanning the ages beginning in France during the time of Louis XIV and continuing to the "New World" and in fact around the world. Bantam published the books in one volume, titled "Angélique" in 1958. The first Angélique book, at over 900 pages, was published in 1957 in France (and in 1956 in Germany) in two volumes to make it "easier" to read, entitled Angélique, Marquise of the Angels and Angélique, the Road to Versailles. He was a Russian aristocrat who had fled Russia during the revolution, and they met during World War II. The books were first released in English under the name of Sergeanne Golon and later some under the name Anne et Serge Golon. Anne Golon is the pseudonym of Simone Goloubinoff, who together with her husband, Vsevolod Sergeïvich Goloubinoff, known as Serge Golon, wrote the Angélique books. 6/5/2023 0 Comments November 1963 stephen kingKing is a master at evoking small-town America from the 50s and 60s. Rich details of 1950s and 1960s American life Novelist Stephen King In 11.22.63, Jake travels the classic hero’s journey, from a jaded high school teacher, bruised from his divorce from his alcoholic wife, to a man who discovers the love of his life and the courage to do what hurts in order to put right the problems he’s caused. Into his portrait of the Kennedy era, King weaves the love story of Jake, now known as George, and Sadie, one that never becomes overly treacly but instead is detailed with humour and realism. And, as the ominous date 11.22.63 approaches, he encounters a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald.’ In this haunting world, Jake falls in love with Sadie, a beautiful high school librarian. Leaving behind a world of computers and mobile phones, he goes back to a time of big American cars and diners, of Lindy Hopping, the sound of Elvis and the taste of root beer. To quote from the back narrative: ‘In 2011, Jake Epping, an English teacher from Lisbon Falls, Maine, sets out on an insane – and insanely possible – mission to prevent the Kennedy assassination. An lengthy 734 pages long, the book examines the "butterfly effect” that results when one man tries to change the past. Stephen King is often referred to as "the master storyteller" and for me this is never been more evident than in his epic novel 11.22.63. Liam was already entrenched in his aunt’s house like some glowering grumpy giant when Mara moved in, with his big muscles and kissable mouth just sitting there on the couch tempting respectable scientists to the dark side…but Helena was her mentor and Mara’s not about to move out and give up her inheritance without a fight. Okay, sure, technically she’s the interloper. And other rules Liam, her detestable big-oil lawyer of a roommate, knows nothing about. Though their fields of study might take them to different corners of the world, they can all agree on this universal truth: when it comes to love and science, opposites attract and rivals make you burn….Īs an environmental engineer, Mara knows all about the delicate nature of ecosystems. Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are friends first, scientists always. A scientist should never cohabitate with her annoyingly hot nemesis – it leads to combustion. 6/5/2023 0 Comments The gift o henryThese stories were written in the early 1900's, so you can find them all free online with a little searching.
